"Everybody should believe in something. I believe I'll have another drink." - Unknown
Rolex watches, Die Hard, chivalry: these are just a few things never go out of style. But having to stay home all day and night during quarantine? That’s old news. If you’re ready for a change, then you absolutely need to try your hand at making these Gentlemen-approved cocktails at the house.
It might not be your typical bar scene, but at least you won’t have to leave a tip.
Check it out.
#1: The Negroni
This simple yet potent cocktail features just three ingredients: Gin, Campari, and Sweet Vermouth. When perfectly combined, it tastes like a cherry wine with hints of citrus. Here’s how to make it:
1 oz Gin
1 oz Campari
1 oz Sweet Vermouth
Stir together all three ingredients and serve over ice. Add a slice of lemon for garnish and you have yourself one heck of a cocktail.
#2: The Old Fashioned
It doesn’t get any more classic than the Old Fashioned - history is in its name! This timeless drink begins with bourbon and has a slightly bitter taste. Consider it a rite of passage for the dapper Gentleman with refined tastes.
2 oz bourbon (you can substitute rye whiskey if that’s your jam)
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 tsp sugar (use a sugar cube if you want to keep it classy)
Pour your bourbon into a rocks glass and let the spherical ice cube dissolve (or stir in the sugar if you’re going cube-less). Drip in a dash or two of Angostura bitters, add ice, and don with an orange twist or maraschino cherry. If you want to cut the taste a little, a splash of club soda works well here, too.
#3: The Whiskey Sour
Fine whiskey has always been a go-to for the Modern Gentleman. It’s not the toughest drink on the block, but it’s an easy cocktail that packs a pretty powerful taste. Here’s how to make it:
2 oz whiskey
Lemon juice or sour mix
Combine 2 oz whiskey with 1 oz of lemon juice or sour mix. You can also play around with the ratios to get your perfect flavor. Garnish with a cherry or any other type of fruit in your fridge, like pineapple or blueberries.
There are a lot of variations on this classic cocktail, so you can absolutely make it your own. Add a dash of egg white and you’ve got yourself a Boston Sour. Swap the whiskey for amaretto and you’ve got an Amaretto Sour, or use Midori (melon-flavored liqueur) for a Midori Sour.
#4: The Manhattan
The Manhattan is the quintessential cocktail for distinguished Gentlemen. Chances are you’ve sipped your fair share of plenty, but never really knew the secrets within. You might be surprised to know how deceptively simple it truly is:
Canadian or rye whiskey
Sweet red Vermouth
The classic ratio is 3-parts whiskey to 1-part vermouth, with a dash of bitters. This is a shaken-not-stirred cocktail, and all the shaking helps to melt the ice and cut the bitterness. Pour into a martini glass if you’re feeling fancy, then garnish with a cherry.
Which of these classic easy cocktails are you ready to try?
As always...Stay Suave Gentlemen.
