The ultimate early morning routine to help improve your life
“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love." -Marcus Aurelius
To be honest, there’s not a lot of things in the world that can top a productive day. Waking up at the crack of dawn, getting a workout in, killing it at your job, and then ending with a chilled glass of bourbon on the couch as you reminisce about how badass you are is what most would call “the absolute dream”. Yet, few people consistently have days like this. Why?
My intuition tells me that the problem stems from a lack of credible knowledge, poor planning, and low self-belief. With that in mind, we’ve outlined a few strategies in this article that will help you to get out of bed more quickly, get moving, and start defeating your days like Modern Gentlemen and living the life you deserve. Let’s get to it.
#1: For the love of all things holy, do NOT snooze that alarm
This is, quite frankly, the most difficult part. It’s something everybody struggles with, myself included. In this day and age, it’s almost too easy to reach over to your nightstand, hit the snooze button, and enjoy 5 more minutes of precious beauty sleep. However, I believe that over 50% of the battle is won simply by getting out of bed. So, set your alarm in a place that forces you to get up to turn it off, stretch your body, rub your eyes, and get on with defeating your day.
#2: Once you’re up, down a glass of warm lemon water
To be completely honest, my initial thought was that drinking lemon water was a fad that was extremely over-hyped. However, after taking a deeper dive and doing some research on my own, it actually has a myriad of health benefits. Studies have shown that drinking a warm glass of lemon water first thing in the morning helps to wake you up, flush your digestive system, rehydrate your body, and reduce pain in your joints and muscles. Instead of putting on a fresh pot of coffee as soon as you get out of bed, substitute it for an 8 oz. glass of lemon water and see how you feel. Trust me. It works.
#3: Get moving
I think this one is a no-brainer. In order to fully wake yourself up, you need to start moving. Hit the gym for a 6 am lift, run a few miles around the block, or walk your dog for an extended period of time. Whatever it is that you enjoy doing, get after it. Not only will you be able to go straight home when 5:00 rolls around, but you’ll also get better sleep and have more time in the evenings to do the things you actually enjoy. Studies have also shown that you burn 20% more body fat by working out on an empty stomach and the endorphins released during a morning routine help set a positive tone to the day. What are you waiting for? Get going.
#4: Take a cold shower
There’s no easy way to say it…this step is going to suck. No matter the time of day you take one, it never gets any easier. That said, although it’s extremely tough, taking a cold shower is the cherry on top of the perfect morning routine as it helps to relieve some of the muscle soreness from your workout, improve blood flow, and keep you energized throughout the work day. Most importantly, it helps to build a sense of fortitude that will translate into other areas of your life.
Taking a cold shower is awful. Period. But when you are able to endure discomfort and get it done, things you once thought were terrible don’t seem as grueling. Training for a half marathon? Let’s do it. Biking 50 miles in 95-degree Texas weather? Hammer down. After a while, you’ll start accomplishing more difficult things that were once held back by excuses and your happiness will improve. Don’t believe me? Give it a try.
Until next time….stay suave Gentlemen.
